Increases in serum GGT activity are primarily indicative of cholestatic liver disease but may result from colonic displacement or the administration of drugs.
Rule of thumb:
1) When GGT, SGOT and CPK are all elevated then rule out extrahepatic cholestasis and intra-hepatic cholestasis
2) When GGT is high and SGOT and CPK are normal then rule out colonic displacement and drug induced drugs such as dexamethasone, prednisone, rifampin, and benzimidazoles.
